Fly Fishing

The area around Aspen is world famous for the incredible fishing found in its many rivers, creeks and lakes. The Roaring Fork River is a premier fishery that starts high on Independence pass and flows for 70 miles to its confluence with the Colorado River. From small, beautiful brook trout in its upper stretches to 10 pound browns along the lower river, you can find a variety of fishing experiences on this fantastic river. The lower stretch is best enjoyed from the comfort of a raft or drift boat, while the upper sections are perfect for wading.

The Frying Pan is a tail water known for its huge rainbows that feed below the dam and are very difficult to catch. Many would tell you the effort is well worth it though to land one of these monster trout. The locals know that the further you get from the dam, the less crowds you’ll encounter and the fishing is just as good. This river is easy to wade, but don’t expect any solitude!

The Crystal is a lesser known river, offering seclusion and incredible scenery. The fish here are generally smaller, but occasionally you’ll find a bigger surprise on the end of your line. The views of the Elk Mountains along the upper stretches are simply stunning.

In addition to these excellent rivers, there are hundreds of high mountain lakes that dot the area, and many offering great fishing opportunities. With a light pack and your fishing gear, it’s easy to hike in a couple of miles and enjoy the pristine beauty of an alpine lake.

There are numerous public access points to all these rivers. Stop by one of the local shops to get the latest conditions, pick up some new gear or hire guide to find the best fishing on the river.
